Tooth Crown

The restoration of badly damaged tooth or decayed tooth can be done by using materials that will be fabricated and cemented into the place by replacing that damaged teeth. Such materials are called crowns or caps which more or less resembles like a tooth. Mostly used for cosmetic purposes to cover those cracked or damaged teeth or teeth that is badly discolored.

The preparation of the crowns is done at the laboratory where these are fabricated. Mostly the crowns that are first fixed on the teeth are made of stainless steel or plastic and it’s for temporary purpose. Later pre fabricated crowns are fixed for permanent use. The Crowns that are used are mostly made of alloys like gold or PFM that means the porcelain fused to the metal. Most of the patients used the all metal crowns or the PFM Crowns as they are better and stronger. They also look exactly like our normal teeth. A typical life span of the crown will be around 7 years and it may extend depending on the way it’s used.

Make sure that the wearing of the crowns has to be done by the dentist and not done by yourself. The making of crowns is easier since the materials required for the fabrication is easily available. Few crowns that are made of gold require heat so that it can fix nicely to the teeth. Nowadays the use of computers and software’s are taken for the design of the caps or crowns.

Before fitting the crowns, few patients may require to go for root canal treatment, if they have extensive decay or injury on the tooth’s pulp. A foundation is required to fix the crown and this is done by the dentist. Foundation is required when large areas of teeth are missing or damaged. The dentist will do some filing to the tooth before placing the crown, The All metal crowns are thinner than the Porcelain ones and so less filing is done on the tooth.

To make the crown, the impressions of the tooth are made by taking a piece of cord or thread and pushed down around the tooth. The impressions that are made will be sent to the lab and the crowns are made. During this time the dentist will suggest you to wear temporary crown that are made of plastic. Be careful on those temporary crowns. Few may cause the tooth to decay. After few days of wearing the dentist will remove the temporary crowns and fix permanent crowns there that is cemented to the tooth.
